Why Choose Supabase?

Pros & Strengths

Generous free plan to start
Postgres, auth and storage in one

Cons & Drawbacks

Free projects can be paused if unused; the Pro plan avoids that

Our Software Verdict

A hosted Postgres database with authentication and file storage, so a solo founder can ship a product without running servers. The free plan is for early projects.

Who Supabase is for

Supabase is a hosted Postgres database with sign-in and file storage, so you can build a product without running servers. It suits a solo founder who can write some code, or work with a developer, and wants a standard database. It is more than you need for a simple site.

Free plan and pricing

On the maker's pricing page, the Free plan allows two active projects, with 500 MB of database per project, 1 GB of file storage and 50,000 monthly active users. Free projects are paused after a week of inactivity, and backups are not included. Pro is listed from US$25 a month and adds 100,000 monthly active users, 8 GB of disk per project, daily backups kept for 7 days and email support. Our price above is converted to Australian dollars, so confirm it at checkout.

  • Free: good for building and testing.
  • Pro: before you launch to real customers, so the project is not paused and you have backups.

Getting set up

  • Create a project and choose the region closest to your users.
  • Design your tables, and turn on row-level security before you store any user data.
  • Add sign-in with email or a social provider.
  • Connect your app with the project URL and the public key, and keep the service key secret.

Limits to know about

A free project that goes quiet is paused, which is risky for anything live. Security rules need care, because a mistake can expose data. Usage beyond the plan is billed, so watch bandwidth and storage as you grow.

Alternatives

Firebase is the best-known alternative, with a different data model. PlanetScale and Neon offer hosted databases. For a no-code start, Airtable or Notion databases can be enough.

Where it fits in a stack

Supabase is the data and sign-in layer in the Lean SaaS Founder stack.
